INFOCOMM: Measuring Intelligibility with STIPA with Jeremy Elsesser and Jim Maltese

Measuring Intelligibility with STIPA

Thursday June 9th, 2022 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Audio is described in many different ways. It can be echo-y, or hollow, or thin, or “like a middle school gymnasium”. One thing is for sure, we know when it’s bad. If users can’t be understood, or if meetings can’t last more than 10 minutes without users getting fatigued attempting to translate the poor audio into something meaningful, we have an issue. There are many ways to assure system audio is designed and setup correctly, but how do you verify if the system is intelligible? Enter the STIPA intelligibility test.

In this session, we will put STIPA to the test. Not only will we discuss measuring intelligibility and how to perform STIPA testing, we’ll also put it to use. The local PA system will be measured to see how well it is distributing audio to the room. And for fun, we’ll also measure the effects of face masks on intelligibility, so see how these necessary precautions are affecting the way we communicate. Users will walk away with knowledge of measuring intelligibility, when and how to measure STIPA, what tolerances should be allowed in their systems, and some fun, anecdotal testing results about whether face masks affect the way we communicate.

  • IT professionals who are responsible for designing, implementing, or maintaining networked AV systems

Prerequisites:
Students must have experience in network configuration and or have taken the Networking Technology course.

Course Features:

  • Discover client needs for networked systems, beginning with a robust introduction to IT networks and terminology.
  • Intercept, filter, and read network conversations between AV and IT devices through interactive Wireshark network analyzer demos.
  • Discuss streaming, digital signage, conferencing, security, service level agreements, remote monitoring and management, and other software applications.
  • Specify devices for enterprise networks while navigating conflicts between network policies and customer demands.
  • Learn how to agree upon, document and stick to shared expectations for networked systems with allied IT trades.

INFOCOMM: Creating a Consistent User Experience at Scale with Jim Maltese

Creating a Consistent User Experience at Scale

Tuesday, June 7th, 2022 10:30 am - 11:30 am

AV is hard, but it doesn’t need to be nearly as hard as people are making it out to be. There are certain steps that can be taken to assure consistency across a global AV program, even with several different architects and integrators as stakeholders. In this presentation, we will discuss this recipe for AV success.

It all starts with having a centralized AV program team steering the ship. A catalog of standard systems that satisfies 95% of users’ needs streamlines the offerings and required estimating phase. Requiring a documented quality management process assures that the end results are the same around the globe, and as a bonus, supporting a finite number of system types makes living with these systems a breeze. We will explore each step and participants will leave with (hopefully) a new perspective on how they can tackle and manage their AV assets globally without all the constant fire drills.

INFOCOMM: AV Analytics and What We Do With All This Data? With Jim Maltese

AV Analytics and What We Do With All This Data?

Wednesday June 8th, 2022 2:30 pm - 2:50 pm

Technology managers have vast amounts of data available to them, but very few are taking full advantage of it. Imagine being able to make informed decisions on room capacity, technology requirements, user experience, and other AV architecture criteria based on actual room usage data!

Users will walk away with real-world examples of how to collect critical room-usage data from their equipment and their users. We'll cover case studies on how this data changed the way technology managers interacted with their AV assets. We will also discuss how this data can be accessed and consumed easily through dashboarding and periodic room-usage reviews. AV Room Usage Data Analytics is a budding AV service being offered in the industry. This presentation will allow participants to tap this easily accessible information in their current AV deployments and dramatically increase their knowledge about how users are interfacing with their AV systems.

INFOCOMM: Monitoring Meeting Rooms and the Journey Towards a Single Pane of Glass with Fred Loucks

Monitoring Meeting Rooms and the Journey Towards a Single Pane of Glass

Thursday June 9th, 2022 8:30 am - 9:30 am

Today’s AV Technology Managers are responsible for hundreds if not thousands of meeting spaces, and the biggest pain-point for most of them is this: their users know about meeting room issues before they do. They have no real way of knowing what is going on in their spaces. In addition, there are several other insufficiencies with the industry’s current offerings:
• Lack of multi-vendor support in a single platform, which creates silos.
• Limited to surface-level data collection, which restricts data mining and analysis.
• Lack of programmable collection methods, which gates enhanced collection.

In order to navigate these concerns and more, AV Technology Managers have to familiarize themselves with monitoring best practices, industry trends, and the current market of monitoring tools. It can be difficult to know where to start. In this session we’ll discuss each of these points, lay out a series of practical steps towards single panel of glass monitoring, explore benefits of centralized data collection, investigate why AV monitoring is so hard in the first place, and discuss what we can do as an industry to fix it.

And complete brochure description:

Have you ever been blindsided by a meeting room outage? Then this session is for you! Together we’ll explore the core issues and challenges in meeting room and AV monitoring at large, lay out the steps to success in implementing single pane of glass monitoring, discuss the benefits of centralized data collection, and dig into why AV monitoring is so hard in the first place.
