A Higher Education Audio Visual Case Study
Thunderbird School of Global Management, a unit of the ASU Knowledge Enterprise plans to relocate the campus from 1 Global Place Glendale, AZ to the Arizona Center office building located in downtown Phoenix at 400 E Van Buren St, Phoenix, AZ.
The intent is to use as much of the legacy equipment as practical. Four classrooms were upgraded in the Executive Education building in September of 2016. Thunderbird staff will un-install and safely pack the equipment racks and projectors from these classrooms for the AV Contractor to stage at their premises and update the Crestron control software, replace the existing wireless receivers, install the hearing assist transmitter and the Mersive Solstice. Three (3) Panasonic PT-RZ770 projectors shall be removed and packed from the lecture halls by the AV Contractor. Additional legacy equipment shall also be uninstalled and packed by Thunderbird staff for re-purposing in the new facility. All legacy equipment is currently in use and in good working condition. The Arizona Center campus consists of three floors. The seventh floor is primarily student oriented with classrooms, study rooms, breakout rooms and presentation preparation rooms. The eighth floor primarily houses staff and faculty. The ninth floor concentrates on the Executive Education team as well as administration. There are conference rooms and huddle rooms located on these floors that will utilize AV equipment.
AV System Details
These classrooms shall contain a projector, ceiling speakers, ceiling microphones, a PTZ camera for lecture capture and a lectern with a Crestron DM presentation switcher and control touch panel. Routing of all signals from the lectern shall be via the DM presentation switcher in the lectern up to a Crestron DM scaler, then into the confidence monitor. A second DM output shall be routed to the HD-BaseT input of the video projector. Independent routing of the DM outputs shall be provided in the “tech pages” of the touch panel. Main audio is routed from the DM presentation switcher to the 200W/70v amplifier, then to nine (9) ceiling speakers. A mix-minus output from the DM presentation switcher is sent to the PC for lecture capture or collaborative conferencing. The lectern contains a dedicated 24-inch monitor connected to the HDMI output of the presentation switcher. A separate rack cabinet houses all the equipment and is inserted into Euro Design Systems presenter’s station. AV twisted pair wiring (OF/OI) shall be terminated at a wall plate behind the presenter’s station. The AV Contractor is responsible for connecting owner furnished patch cable to the equipment. AV and data wiring shall be routed through a Wiremold OFR over-the-floor raceway (OF/OI). The AV contractor shall run the speaker, microphone, screen control and USB3.0 camera cables down the wall into the OFR raceway. All AV and data cables exit the raceway box via a brushed grommet pass-through.
Collaborative Classroom
This classroom shall contain a projector, ceiling speakers, ceiling microphones, and a lectern with a Crestron DM presentation switcher and control touch panel. This classroom also serves as a web conferencing space with interaction to an operator-driven classroom control center. Two (2) HD PTZ cameras shall be ceiling mounted and controlled from the Classroom Control Center. Routing of all signals from the lectern shall be via the DM presentation switcher in the lectern up to a Crestron DM scaler, then into the confidence monitor. A second DM output shall be routed to the HD-BaseT input of the video projector. The second HDMI output of the presentation switcher shall feed a Crestron DM-TX4K202C transmitter that runs back to a DM matrix switcher in the Classroom Control Center. In addition, a video feed from the Classroom Control Center shall be routed to a Crestron DM-RMC-SCALER-C connected to the projector’s HDMI input. Independent routing of the DM outputs shall be provided in the “tech pages” of the touch panel. Main audio is routed from the DM presentation switcher to the 200W/70v amplifier, then to nine (9) ceiling speakers. A mix-minus output from the DM presentation switcher is sent to the PC for lecture capture or collaborative conferencing. Audio lines run to and from the classroom control center as well. The lectern contains a dedicated 24-inch monitor connected to the HDMI output of the presentation switcher. A separate rack cabinet houses all the equipment and is inserted into Euro Design Systems presenter’s station. AV twisted pair wiring (OF/OI) shall be terminated at a wall plate behind the presenter’s station. The AV Contractor is responsible for connecting owner furnished patch cable to the equipment. Large Collaborative Classroom
This classroom shall contain a two (2) projectors, two (2) confidence monitors, ceiling speakers, ceiling microphones, three (3) PTZ cameras, and a lectern with a Crestron DM presentation switcher and 10” control touch panel. This classroom also serves as a web conferencing space with interaction to an operator-driven classroom control center. Three (3) HD PTZ cameras shall be ceiling mounted and controlled from the classroom control center. Routing of all source signals at the lectern shall be via the DM switcher then the DM signal is sent back to a Crestron DM-MD8x8 matrix switcher the Classroom Control Center. Outputs from the DM matrix shall feed the two projectors and the two confidence monitors. Independent routing of the DM outputs shall be provided in the “tech pages” of the touch panel. Main audio is routed from the DM matrix switcher to the Behringer audio mixer, then to a QSC 400W/70v amplifier, then to twelve (12) ceiling speakers. Audio lines shall be run to and from the Classroom Control Center as well. The lectern contains a dedicated 24-inch monitor connected to the HDMI output of the presentation switcher. Integrated rack rails support the equipment inserted into Euro Design Systems lectern. AV twisted pair wiring (OF/OI) shall be terminated at a wall plate behind the presenter’s station. The AV Contractor is responsible for connecting owner furnished patch cable to the equipment. AV and data wiring shall be routed through a Wiremold OFR over-the-floor raceway (OF/OI). The AV contractor shall run the audio lines from the Classroom Control Center down the wall into the OFR raceway. All AV and data cables exit the raceway box via a brushed grommet pass-through.
Classroom Control Room
The Classroom Control Center is the hub to conduct recordings, webcasts or two-way web conferencing from either Room 730 or Room 732. Typically, when a collaborative web conference is conducted the presenters are either in the classroom or at a remote location connected via web conferencing software such as Zoom, Skype for Business, Blue Jeans, Vidyo, etc. The material presented in the classroom from the lectern or presenter’s station as well as the audio and video camera capture it is then mixed through the Tricaster and then sent out as a webcast via IP streaming or delivered to the Streaming PC via the Vaddio AV Bridge. In most cases the PC in the classroom is used as a participant in the call and the Streaming PC in the Classroom Control Center is the host. Other times the output of the Streaming PC is sent into the classroom.The Classroom Control Room shall contain the AV racks, the Tricaster TC-1 4K Live Production Switcher (O.F.E.), PTZ Camera Controller (O.F.E.), HD-SDI router (O.F.E.), Crestron DM-MD8X8 matrix switcher (O.F.E.), Crestron CP3 Control Processor (O.F.E.), Behringer X32 audio mixer (O.F.E.), Vaddio AV Bridge (O.F.E.), and Monitors (O.F.E.). The control surfaces and keyboards are located on the production console counter top.
Large Conference Room
This conference room shall be used primarily for web conferencing and large collaborative meetings. The room shall contain a two 70” displays side-by-side, two wall-mounted speakers, a three-element table top conferencing microphone, a Crestron DM presentation switcher installed in the credenza underneath the displays, a 10” control touch panel located on the table, four TT100 cubbies each populated with VGA & HDMI cables, one DMPS-4K-50 and a Vaddio Conference Shot PTZ camera mounted in between the two displays. The design intent is to use one display for local content and the second display for far-end web conferencing. Up to eight laptops or tablets may be connected at the table. Selecting the source display can be made either from the touch panel or by pressing a button on the TT100. The PTZ camera shall be controlled by the touch panel. The eight inputs shall be routed to the DMPS3-4K-50 switcher that shall be attached underneath the conference table. The HDMI will be converted to DM using a DMTX4K100CG transmitter also attached underneath the conference table. The Clear One Delta microphone shall also be connected to the switcher. Finally, the touch panel and network connection to the switcher shall be connected to a CEN-SW-POE5 hub also mounted underneath the table. The DM CAT6a cable, one CAT5e cable, and one audio cable shall be run through an OFR raceway back to the credenza. All AV and data cables exit the raceway box via a brushed grommet pass-through. A separate rack cabinet houses all the equipment and is inserted into a credenza located underneath the two displays. The two HDMI outputs of the Crestron DMPS3-300C-AEC presentation shall be connected to the displays. Two JBL Control 5 speakers shall be connected to the 8-ohm speaker outputs of the presentation switcher and wall mounted above the displays.
Medium Conference Rooms
These conference rooms shall be used primarily for typical meetings and occasionally web conferencing. The rooms shall contain legacy displays from the Glendale campus. Most will be 46” or 52” wall-mounted displays. A Crestron HDMD400CERX HD-BaseT receiver will be attached to the rear of the display. A Logitech C930 webcam (O.F.E.) will also be attached to the display. A PC shall be installed in a credenza located below the display. The USB from the webcam and the HDMI cable to the local input of the receiver shall be connected to the PC. One (1) Crestron TT100 cubby shall be installed in the conference table. Two HDMI cables and one VGA + Audio cable shall connect to the Crestron HDMD400CETX secured underneath the table. Display power on/off shall be assigned to one button on the TT100. Input select shall be assigned to the other button. A Clear One Chat 50 USB conferencing mic (O.F.E.) shall also be installed on the table. One CAT6a HD-BaseT cable and one USB extension cable shall be run through the OFR raceway and be connected to the PC at the credenza and the receiver at the display.
Small Conference Rooms and Huddle Rooms
Room 816 and room 916 are the Dean’s office and Director General’s office respectively. The remaining rooms are small conference or huddle rooms. The configuration is the same in all spaces. There shall be a small conference table with an owner furnished 40’ – 46” display mounted to the end of the table. A Logitech C930 webcam (O.F.E.) will also be attached to the display. An owner furnished desktop PC shall be affixed in a security housing underneath the table near the display. The USB from the webcam, the USB table microphone and a Display Port cable from the display shall be connected to the PC. One HDMI cable and one VGA + Audio cable shall connect direct to the display and be routed through an owner furnished in-surface grommeted power/data center. All display functions will be controlled with a remote control or directly at the display.
Student Study Rooms
There shall be a small conference table with 43” Sharp PN-Y436 display mounted to the end of the table. One HDMI cable and one VGA + Audio cable shall connect direct to the display and be routed through an owner furnished in-surface grommeted power/data center. All display functions will be controlled with a remote control or directly at the display.
Student Breakout Rooms
These breakout rooms shall be used primarily for student collaboration and occasionally web conferencing. There shall be a conference table capable of seating 6-8 people with a Sharp 43” display mounted to the end of the table. A Logitech C930 webcam (O.F.E.) will also be attached to the display. An owner furnished desktop PC shall be affixed in a security housing underneath the table near the display. A Crestron HDMD400CERX HD-BaseT receiver will be attached to the rear of the display. The USB from the webcam and the HDMI cable to the local input of the receiver shall be connected to the PC. One (1) Crestron TT100 cubby shall be installed in the conference table. Two HDMI cables and one VGA + Audio cable shall connect to the Crestron HDMD400CETX secured underneath the table. Display power on/off shall be assigned to one button on the TT100. Input select shall be assigned to the other button. A Clear One Chat 50 USB conferencing mic (O.F.E.) shall also be installed on the table. One CAT6a HD-BaseT cable shall be run under the table and connected to receiver at the display.
Large Breakout Room
This breakout room is in an open-seating area with no table or credenza. A 70” display shall be wall mounted and a Mersive Solstice wireless presentation pod shall be affixed to the rear. Student will be able to connect their laptops, phones or tablets to the display via the on-screen instructions.
Student Presentation Prep Rooms
These rooms shall be used primarily for students preparing for presentations in the classrooms or presenting case studies or other materials to a client via web conferencing. The rooms shall contain 70” interactive touch screens wall-mounted displays with a Crestron HDMD400CERX receiver and a Dell 7040 Micro-PC affixed to the rear. A Logitech C930 webcam (O.F.E.) will also be attached to the display. The USB from the webcam and the USB cable for the touch screen display shall be connected to the PC. An HDMI cable from the Micro PC shall be connected to the local input of the Crestron receiver. One (1) Crestron TT100 cubby shall be installed in the conference table. Two HDMI cables and one VGA + Audio cable shall connect to the Crestron HDMD400CETX secured underneath the table. Display power on/off shall be assigned to one button on the TT100. Input select shall be assigned to the other button. A Clear One Chat 50 USB conferencing mic (O.F.E.) shall also be installed on the table. One CAT6a HD-BaseT cable and one USB extension cable shall be run through the OFR raceway and be connected to the PC and the receiver at the display.
Digital Signage- Break Room, Elevator Lobby, Reception Area
There are five locations for digital signage displays. Three locations will use existing NEC X551NU displays (O.F.E.). These will be in the elevator lobbies. An owner furnished 46” display shall be in the break room. One new Samsung DM55E display shall be in the reception area on the eighth floor. A Dell 7040 Micro-PC with Four Winds software shall be affixed to the rear of each display.
